Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common oral cancer. Most often is incurable and chemotherapy or radiotherapy have important limitations which may be reduced by introducing natural molecules extracted from plants, such as cannabis. The study uses two isomers of it's psychoactive product, THC ( Δ9-THC and Δ8-THC) and investigates the behaviour of oral cancer cells when in contact with different concentrations of Δ9-THC and Δ8-THC. The study demonstrates that cannabinoids were able to decrease oral cancer cell growth through various mechanisms, including apoptosis, autophagy and oxidative stress. These results suggest a potential use of these molecules as a therapy against oral cancer.
Il carcinoma delle cellule squamose orale è il cancro orale più diffuso. Molto spesso è incurabile e chemioterapie o radioterapie hanno importanti limitazioni che possono essere ridotte introducendo molecole naturali estratte dalle piante, come la cannabis. Lo studio utilizza due isomeri del suo prodotto psicoattivo, il THC (Δ9-THC e Δ8-THC) e indaga il comportamento delle cellule del cancro orale quando si trovano a contatto con diverse concentrazioni di Δ9-THC e Δ8-THC. Lo studio dimostra che i cannabinoidi sono stati in grado di diminuire la crescita delle cellule del cancro orale attraverso diversi meccanismi, tra cui l'apoptosi, autofagia e stress ossidativo. Questi risultati suggeriscono un potenziale uso di queste molecole come terapia contro il cancro orale.
