OBJECTIVE. The Baby Signs® Program enables hearing children between 0 and 24 months to be able to communicate early needs, thoughts, and moods even before they have learned to speak through the use of easy-to-learn signs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the contribution of signs on communicative-linguistic development in an extremely preterm birth condition following the application of the Baby Signs® Program. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two parent-completed questionnaires were used to assess the development of communicative-linguistic development: "Baby's First Vocabulary"- PVB, to assess language skills, and "Baby's Socio-Conversational Skills"- ASCB, to assess pragmatic skills. A coding scheme was also devised to analyze video recordings of mother-child interactions. Three assessments were conducted: in late January 2022 (T0), in late June to early July 2022 (T1), and in late to October 2022 (T2). MAIN RESULTS. The results showed an expansion of receptive vocabulary with an age of lexical development three months higher than the correct age of the child. Thus, it can be said that there is a positive correlation between the use of gestural communication through the Baby Signs® program and the development of receptive language skills. In contrast, expansion of expressive vocabulary was not detected and first words did not appear: the child's extremely preterm birth condition should be considered as a risk condition for communicative-linguistic development. With regard to assertive and responsive skills, there was no significant development, but video recordings of the mother and child's communicative interactions reveal an increase in the child's shared attention behaviors, albeit still inconstant, greater attention to communication and an increase in communicative intentionality. Finally, the experience of the child's parents should be taken into account: through signs they are able to better understand their child's needs. CONCLUSIONS. The results demonstrate the benefits obtained from the use of signs, although in some cases there was not an evolution in line with the correct age of the child, which is hypothesized to be related to her preterm birth condition. It is considered important to monitor the evolution of the baby's development. The greater benefits of the Baby Signs® program will also be able to be more accurately assessed over time, given the early age of the baby. From the results obtained, the Baby Signs program may prove to be a valuable support for communicative-linguistic development.
OBIETTIVO. Il Programma Baby Signs® permette a bambini udenti tra 0 e 24 mesi di poter comunicare precocemente bisogni, pensieri e stati d’animo ancor prima che abbiano imparato a parlare tramite l’uso di segni facili da imparare. L’obiettivo di questo studio è quello di valutare il contributo dei segni sullo sviluppo comunicativo- linguistico in una condizione di nascita estremamente pretermine a seguito dell’applicazione del Programma Baby Signs®. MATERIALI E METODI. Per valutare l’evoluzione dello sviluppo comunicativo- linguistico sono stati utilizzati due questionari compilati dai genitori: “Il Primo Vocabolario del Bambino”- PVB, per valutare le abilità linguistiche, e “Le abilità socio-conversazionali del bambino”– ASCB, per valutare le abilità pragmatiche. È stato ideato inoltre uno schema di codifica per analizzare le videoregistrazioni delle interazioni tra madre e bambina. Sono state effettuate tre valutazioni: a fine gennaio 2022 (T0), tra fine giugno e inizio luglio 2022 (T1) e a fine a ottobre 2022 (T2). RISULTATI PRINCIPALI. Dai risultati è emerso un ampliamento del vocabolario recettivo con un’età di sviluppo lessicale superiore di tre mesi rispetto all’età corretta della bambina. Si può affermare quindi che vi sia una correlazione positiva tra l’uso di una comunicazione gestuale attraverso il programma Baby Signs® e l’evoluzione delle abilità recettive linguistiche. Non è stato rilevato invece un ampliamento del vocabolario espressivo e non sono comparse le prime parole: va considerata la condizione di nascita estremamente pretermine della bambina quale condizione di rischio per lo sviluppo comunicativo- linguistico. Per quanto riguarda le abilità assertive e responsive non si è verificata un’evoluzione significativa, ma dalle videoregistrazioni delle interazioni comunicative tra madre e bambina si rilevano un aumento dei comportamenti di attenzione condivisa della bambina, seppur ancora incostanti, una maggiore attenzione alla comunicazione ed un aumento dell’intenzionalità comunicativa. Va tenuta in considerazione infine l’esperienza dei genitori della bambina, che si sono dimostrati soddisfatti: attraverso i segni riescono a comprendere meglio le esigenze della loro bambina. CONCLUSIONI. I risultati dimostrano i vantaggi ottenuti dall’utilizzo dei segni, seppur in alcuni casi non vi sia stata un’evoluzione in linea con l’età corretta della bambina che si ipotizza sia legata alla sua condizione di nascita pretermine. Si ritiene importante monitorare l’evoluzione dello sviluppo della bambina. Anche i maggiori benefici del programma Baby Signs® potranno essere valutati con maggior precisione nel tempo, vista l’età precoce della bambina. Dai risultati ottenuti il programma Baby Signs può rivelarsi un valido supporto allo sviluppo comunicativo- linguistico.
