Introduction Open Dialogue, (abbreviated to OD), is a Finnish family-oriented approach, adopted in continuous assistance to people suffering from various mental disorders and in the case of acute psychotic crises. This approach involves the individual and his family (or other caregivers) and consists into meetings characterized by open discussions on all aspects of the clinical situation and on the decision-making process. The purpose of this supplementary review of the literature is to evaluate the applicability of this method in schizophrenic subjects and, specifically, to investigate the expected benefits and the most critical issues encountered. Materials and methods An integrative review of the literature was conducted by consulting the main databases such as MEDLINE and COCHRANE Library through specific search strings with specific MeSH terms “Schizophrenia”; "Open Dialogue"; "Psychotic Disorders"; "Nursing Care". Results / analysis Eight studies were included in the review, three of which were qualitative and five were quantitative. Specifically, they highlight not only high levels of efficacy in terms of clinical results, but also the long-term stability of the treatment outcomes, the satisfaction of the operators and the importance of the family in the sessions, especially in those conducted. in Northern Europe. Discussion / conclusion The Open Dialogue technique has proved useful for improving the symptoms and well-being of schizophrenic subjects, although further studies and research are needed to better highlight the effectiveness and applicability in these care settings. Furthermore, the selected studies show the need for specific training courses for care personnel with the aim of studying the operating methods of this methodology applied in the various care settings.
