ABSTRACT. TITTLE: Promotion and support of breastfeeding: Skills and training of nurses. Narrative literature review INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding is the best food for an infant, since it contains all the nutrients needed to achieve optimum development. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends its exclusivity during the first six months of life, extending to two years of age. However, the existing breastfeeding rates don´t meet the desired objectivesand the positive impact of continued support for mothers with accurate and evidence-based information are known. Health professionals have a fundamental role and implicit responsibility when they address neonatal and maternal and child care. Many of them have insufficient knowledge and need to acquire attitudes and skills to be able to carry out this support. OBJECTIVE: highlight the knowledge and competence of the nurse regarding breastfeeding, understand if nurses have the necessary tools to promote, support and educate new mothers MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research material was selected through the consultation of electronic databases, such as Pubmed, Cochrane and Google Scholar, in the period between June and September 2022. RESULTS: At the end of the research, a total of 137 articles were obtained, of which 30 meet the inclusion criteria based on the type of study and the year of publication. Finally, by carrying out an exhaustive reading of the full text, I selected 12 for their relevance with the aim of making a narrative review. The documents chosen to have different origins. CONCLUSIONS: The support and education of breastfeeding by nursing staff in the pre and postpartum period promotes an increase in the number of mothers who breastfeed. Nevertheless, the results are not as expected, which is why further research is required about the most favorable interventions. Support from professionals is more effective when they receive continuous training in breastfeeding based on evidence knowledge, attitudes, and skills. KEY WORDS: “breastfeeding knowledge”, “nursing staff of maternity”, “support”, “continuing education”.
ABSTRACT TITOLO: Promozione e sostegno dell’allattamento: Competenze e formazione degli infermieri.
