Introduction and objectives of the work: The literature, over the years, has produced a substantial number of articles concerning the emotions and experiences of children with cancer and the parent with a child with cancer, focusing less on what may be the perceptions and sensations of the nurse who provides assistance in a pediatric cancer unit and how much these professional vicissitudes affect everyday life. This aspect is confirmed in the article entitled "From Patient to Provider: The Lived Experience of Pediatric Oncology Survivors Who Whork as Pediatric Oncology Nurses", dating back to 2018 and produced by Teresa M. Conte. The objectives of this paper are two: to research, through a review of the literature, what has been produced regarding the proposed topic and to investigate, through a qualitative research, the emotions and lived stories of the professionals, who work in pediatric oncology field, in order to answer the following research question: “How important is providing care to the pediatric cancer patient in the daily life of the nurse? Materials and methods: in the first instance, a review of the literature was carried out using the CINAHL EBSCO database and the PubMed search generator, after formulating the PICO and building the search string, from which 14 articles relating to the above topic were found quoted. Secondly, a qualitative study was undertaken, involving 15 nurses belonging to the SOD of Pediatric Oncohematology of the Azienda Ospedali Riuniti of Ancona, who were subjected to semi-structured interviews with prior informed consent and maintaining anonymity. The interviews were divided into two parts: the first concerned the personal and professional aspects, while the second was characterized by 10 questions aimed at investigating the main topic of the paper in question. The questions focused mainly on: how much the profession had repercussions in everyday life, what experience had marked the operator in a preponderant way, what perceptions the experience of pediatric death had aroused and what character peculiarities a pediatric cancer nurse should have. Results: both from the articles found through the literature review and from the qualitative study it emerged that this profession involves an important emotional involvement both in professional practice and in daily vicissitudes: some are able to detach emotionally, in order to protect their souls from feelings of pain, suffering, anxiety, sadness and a sense of inability to provide a dignified death, which characterize the working days in this area; others, on the contrary, allow themselves to be more involved, especially when it comes to operators who are parents in their everyday life; still others manage to live this experience serenely, bringing into their lives the joy of a child's smile and his vision of the world around him. Specifically, 4 main issues emerged from the qualitative study: - The nurse in managing emotions: between profession and everyday life; - Aspects of the profession that positively affect the pediatric oncology nurse: care for children with cancer as a tool for nurses to understand life; - How pediatric cancer nurses deal with the death of the child: the importance of ensuring a dignified death; - Emotional and character tools necessary to provide assistance in pediatric oncohematology. Conclusions: the subject matter is so delicate and important that it should be further explored in the future through meetings between nurses operating in the pediatric oncology field.
Tale aspetto viene confermato nell’articolo intitolato “From Patient to Provider: The Lived Experience of Pediatric Oncology Survivors Who Whork as Pediatric Oncology Nurses”, risalente al 2018 e prodotto da Teresa M. Conte.
