Abstract Introduction and objectives: The antibiotic resistance is a problem of global importance, which has become a real threat from the social and economic point of view. Among the most common causes of the phenomenon, in addition to improper prescription of antibiotics, there is misuse and mismanagement The purpose of this survey is to assess the knowledge and behaviour of the students of the degree course in nursing of the Polytechnic University of Marche about the prudent use of antibiotics, since nurses are at the forefront of the fight against the phenomenon. Materials and methods: As a tool to evaluate the students' knowledge of the degree course in nursing at Univpm, about the antibiotic resistance and the behaviors held by them about the use of antibiotics, a questionnaire was administered. The Google Forms application was used to collect the data. Data analysis was then carried out. Results: 380 questionnaires were analyzed, from which it was found that students had a good theoretical knowledge about the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance and antibiotics; in fact, more than 90% of the sample correctly answered 8 out of 12 questions, to assess knowledge of the phenomenon. Only 76.3% of them, however, were aware that antibiotics can cause secondary infections due to the partial destruction of endogenous bacterial flora. Only 77.6% disagree with the statement "Antibiotics are used to treat viral infections." In addition, it was found that 45% of the sample use to keep a stock of advanced antibiotics from previous therapies at home 12.9% of them interrupt the course of antibiotics when it starts to get better and 40,5% of students start the antibiotic therapy without being properly visited first, but after a simple telephone contact with the general practitioner. Analysis: For descriptive analysis, qualitative variables were synthesized through absolute frequencies and percentages, the quantitative variables were synthesized using the median as the centrality index and the interquantum range as the variability index since the distribution was not symmetrical. The association between the results in the study and the characteristics of the participants was evaluated through the Odds Ratio (OR) and its 95% Confidence Interval (IC 95%). Discussion and conclusions: The present study, highlighted how the students have some gaps from the theoretical point of view, regarding the use and effects of antibiotics. Since they will be future nurses it is necessary that they acquire, during the course of studies, adequate training and awareness on this subject.
