The thesis work aims to carry out an in-depth analysis of the dataset provided by a company in the toy sector, with the aim of forecasting the demand and improving the forecasting process of the same. Demand forecasting is a crucial function for companies, who want to remain competitive and increase profits, and consists in forecasting the quantity of a product or service in demand in a given future. The paper offers a contextualization of the work carried out, highlighting how, in the domain considered, i.e. the toy industry, in recent years there has been a rapid evolution, partly emphasized by the COVID-19 emergency. The machine learning tools and algorithms used for regression are presented, such as the regression tree, support vector regression, long short term memory and the arima statistical model. To test these approaches, a dataset relating to a real case study was used, characterized by high seasonality and high data variability. The models produced were evaluated using the following 4 metrics: Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and R^2. The results show that the models based on machine learning algorithms did not provide satisfactory results for the dataset. The arima model was able to understand the evolution of the data and presented a coefficient of determination (R^2) equal to 0.7, proving to be the most appropriate model for forecasting demand, relative to the dataset considered. The results achieved can be considered satisfactory and will provide a solid basis for further analyses.
