This paper is concerned with the technical and informational aspects of cryptocurrencies, with a focus on Bitcoin and the influence it has had in the last decade of the 2000s on so many aspects of society and the world economy. The work was grounded in the theoretical study of cryptocurrencies, as a starting point, and the analysis of data reported in the literature and on the web. It can be seen from this paper that the evolution of cryptocurrencies has been exponential over the years, letting itself be influenced mainly by the advent of the pandemic due to the covid-19 virus. Since the year of the creation of the first cryptocurrency, many others have been created, differing more or less in the characteristics and protocols used. In this paper, a small but important window was taken into the computer and mathematical methods used in cryptocurrency transactions, evaluating the impact they have had and are still having on the outside world. Specifically, all the consequences, both positive and negative, that the advent of cryptocurrencies has entailed were analyzed. Among these consequences we find the energy impact (environmental pollution due to high electricity consumption and increased costs), the increase in malfeasance (use of cryptocurrencies in the dark web for illicit and untraceable purchases), changes to the economic trend (continuous growth of online investments and losses, via Cryptocurrency Trading), and the impact on the world of work and young people (creation of new apps that provide quick earnings through simple everyday actions such as running, studying etc.). Cryptocurrencies are at the same time an advantage as a source of income, technological evolution and youth employment, and a disadvantage as a source of losses and growth of illicit actions. The efforts of those studying and working with these new cyber tools could therefore be to improve the environmental, social and economic impact that the use of cryptocurrencies, but technology in general, currently has on our world.
