ABSTRACT Introduction: An increase in cases of people with borderline personality disorder has been noted in recent years. This psychiatric disorder is characterized by a particular difficulty in creating an effective therapeutic relationship between the patient and the nurse, due to the emotional and behavioral instability of these patients. A relationship that very often involves ineffective and discontinuous assistance. Objective: The objective of this thesis is to identify the elements and behaviors held by borderline subjects that cause the ineffectiveness of the therapeutic relationship, to describe and provide advice and recommendations for optimal assistance. Materials and Methods: The paper proposed here was carried out through a narrative review of scientific articles taken from databases such as PubMed, Google Scohlar and generic search engines. Results: The review highlights the difficulty with the borderline patient in establishing a therapeutic relationship and effective assistance and provides recommendations to which the nurse can refer to manage these problems Conclusions: The review demonstrated that effective nursing requires nurses to deepen their knowledge of borderline personality disorder; a greater knowledge of the disorder will allow the recognition of borderline behaviors defined as negative and harmful to the therapeutic relationship between operator and patient. It will allow the nurse figure to know what to expect from a patient suffering from this disorder, and to know how to best manage a defined complicated assistance from the early stages.
