ABSTRACT Introduction: In this work we want to delve deeper into the construction of what could be a historical research methodology on the figure of the nurse. Historical research, in addition to research on practical techniques and methods, can provide a deeper understanding of today's nursing profession, starting from its roots and its evolution over time and in society. Objectives of the work: the construction of what could be a historical research methodology on the figure of the nurse. The work will develop in depth what could be a historical and at the same time scientific method of study and research and will carry out an examination of classical historians by investigating what later became the common method (or methods) of historiographical investigation. Materials and methods: the research methodology used was that of qualitative research linked to phenomenology, also modulated by the historiographical methodology of Federico Chabod, who adds to the critical evaluation of the sources, the weight of the subjectivity of the historian who carries out the analysis of a certain context. In this sense, seven professionals who wrote nursing history works were interviewed. Most important results: Five themes were extracted: a) the methodology of multidisciplinary triangulation: history, nursing sciences and sociology; b) the difficult availability of primary sources and the great use made of secondary sources; c) the objectivity of the historian in the research process; d) The concept of identity of the nursing profession; e) the need to raise awareness among politicians and legislators about the value of the historical issues of the nursing profession. Analysis and Discussion: Common to all interviewees was the attention to sources. In particular towards those primary sources, which are difficult to trace over time and which require a great deal of research. Hence the great use made of secondary sources. The multidisciplinary triangulation that has the history of nursing with history, nursing sciences and sociology. Which makes the discussion on methodology particularly complex and which fits into many levels of each discipline. The importance of the historian's impartiality in approaching the sources and being able to open up to all the results, not just those confirming personal theses. Conclusions: Identifying a historical methodology in the search for the professional identity of the nurse is a particularly complex path. We started from what classical historians say about the historical research method (Chabod, Braudel, etc.). Also applicable to the nursing question are the search for sources for the purpose of historical research. Therefore writing about the history of nursing implies various implications: on an individual level as a researcher or as a reader; on the nursing level for the professional body and for the doctrine itself; on a systemic level as a potentially useful resource for the healthcare system and for society itself in broader terms. KEYWORDS: research methodology, identity, professional history, nursing historiography.
KEYWORDS: metodologia ricerca, identità, storia professionale, storiografia infermieristica.
