Recently, in New York, a particular clock appeared that shows two numbers: the first, in red, marks a timer, which indicates how much time we have left to act against global warming in order to keep the threshold below the 1.5 ° C and at the time of writing this thesis the countdown marks 7 years and 55 days; the second, in green, instead traces the increase in the percentage of the world's energy that currently comes from renewable sources, representing the value to be achieved, 100%, by the expiry of the timer in red and we are currently reaching 28%. This shows how the issue of environmental sustainability has become relevant in recent years. Therefore, we went in search of different ways to create an increasingly "green" society, among which the Circular Economy system stands out. The Circular Economy (CE) is an economic system that emerges to oppose the open linear system (produce, consume, dispose of), with the aim of achieving sustainable development, simultaneously creating environmental quality, economic prosperity and social equity for the benefit of generations current and future. A side effect of the growing popularity of the circular economy concept among political, industrial and academic communities is the lack of coherence around its definition and scope. Aware of the business opportunities that the circular economy can provide, the European Commission is making significant efforts to support the transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon, resource-efficient and competitive economy. In this thesis we will deal with various managerial aspects of the Circular Economy trying to create a general and comprehensive vision of the various areas in which it can be applied, going to clarify what can be the causes and effects of the problems addressed to its implementation and how overcome them. The first chapter provides an overview of the concept of Circular Economy, explaining the main themes and their areas of application. In the second chapter I focused on a particular framework, ReSOLVE, useful for assisting organizations. In the third I went to explore the connection that arises between the Circular Economy and Industry 4.0, with the use of the Internet of Things, the analysis of big data and the automation of processes, and how they manage to integrate into the ReSOLVE framework. In the fourth I go to analyze the circular strategies, how they fit into their business model and how to adapt the appropriate management control systems. Within the fifth chapter I will go into the theme of sustainable supply chain management. With the sixth chapter I highlighted the concept of "Target" and what they are within the Circular Economy. In the seventh and last chapter I will analyze two case studies carried out in two countries, one internal within the European Union, Finland, and the other external but very connected to the CE, China, as one of the first actuators of the same. It can therefore be seen that the concept of Circular Economy is still far from being completely incorporated within the current society, but also that it is making progress both in the literature and in terms of application.

Abstract

Management Aspects of the Circular Economy
