Introduction The handover process involves the transfer of information and responsibility between healthcare professionals, which occurs during shift changes or between different care settings or healthcare facilities. It is therefore crucial to ensure continuity of care and high-quality patient care that this process is carried out effectively without any loss of information. Several studies have shown that suboptimal handovers or those conducted in the presence of disruptive factors can lead to significant losses in both the quantity and quality of information. Communication errors between healthcare professionals are one of the leading causes of adverse events in healthcare, often resulting in compensation claims by patients against the National Health Service (NHS). Various methods to improve the effectiveness of the handover process, including digitalization, which facilitates more efficient information transfer between healthcare providers, have been widely explored and, in some cases, implemented. Objectives The aim of this study is to assess nurses' knowledge of the handover process and the efficiency of the tools currently used in surgical wards and operating rooms. Materials and Methods An anonymous, voluntary questionnaire was administered to evaluate the general knowledge of the handover process and the perception of nurses regarding the tools currently in use. A Focus Group methodology was used to design the questionnaire, inviting the ward coordinators from the selected departments as a sample. A literature review on the handover process was conducted using PubMed and free web searches on Google. Results and Conclusions All nurses who participated in the study demonstrated awareness of and the importance attributed to the handover process. The tools currently in use were generally rated as 2 adequate or good, although participants expressed the need for improvement to enhance ease of use. Keywords Handover, Surgical patient, Communication, Operating theatre
