Background: The history of nursing is linked to the principles of reciprocity and solidarity since the origins of humanity. This review explores the evolution of surgical nursing, from its anthropological roots to the modern era, focusing on key figures such as Florence Nightingale, who transformed nursing into a profession. The evolution of care in various ancient cultures and the emergence of hospitals in Europe are analyzed, with a focus on the Crimean War. Surgical nursing has benefited from medical advancements, such as anesthesia and antiseptic techniques, which have contributed to the growing autonomy of the nursing profession in modern healthcare. Methods: A historical review was conducted through a critical analysis of scientific literature published over the past two centuries, consulting biomedical databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The keywords used included "history of nursing," "surgical nursing," and "historical evolution." Scientific articles, conference proceedings, books, and web resources were selected, with a chronological approach to reconstruct the historical evolution of nursing care. Results: The review highlights how surgical nursing developed in parallel with medical advances, such as the introduction of anesthesia and antiseptic techniques. The role of nurses in the operating room has become increasingly specialized and professionalized, with a growing clinical responsibility. The historical analysis emphasizes the importance of continuous education and specialization in improving the quality of perioperative care. Conclusions: The review demonstrates that the history of surgical nursing is deeply intertwined with medical and technological progress. The professionalization and autonomy of nurses are the result of a long historical journey and continue to evolve in response to the increasing demands of modern healthcare. Examining the historical roots of the profession is essential to fostering further developments and improvements in nursing practice. Keywords: history of nursing, surgical nursing, historical evolution, Care.
