Introduction The nurse is the professional figure who spends the most time in contact with the patient; therefore, to give holistic care it is essential to establish a good helping relationship which represents a key part of the treatment process. In order to have a therapeutic effect, this interaction must possess some essential characteristics: trust; respect and genuine interest; active listening and empathic understanding; effective communication and professional competence. Objective The objective of this study is to highlight the importance of relationship time in the nursing profession, starting from a sentence of the Code of Ethics. The survey offers a reflection on the possible factors that promote and limit the interaction over time, using the opinion of expert nurses. Materials and Methods The research used an online survey, addressed to a sample of nurses who reflected specific inclusion criteria. The answers were analyzed and compared with the relevant scientific literature. Discussion The research highlights that nursing is not just about technical skills but also about building a human connection that considers the patient in a holistic manner. The study points out the difficulty that patients may feel less important because of too much focus on bureaucracy and technical tasks. The nurses involved in the study reported that lack of time and internal organization were significant obstacles; contrariwise communication skills, the ability to adapt and the authentic interest of the professional represent fundamental resources in relational terms. Conclusions This research shows that spending time building a relationship with the patient is essential in healthcare; it is necessary to develop a spirit of adaptation and shift from a task-based approach to one that puts the patient at the centre. The main challenge is to recover the care time. Keywords “Nurse-patient AND Relationship” “Nurse-patient relations AND time” “Nurse-patient relations AND care”
Parole chiave “Nurse-patient AND Relationship” “Nurse-patient relations AND time” “Nurse-patient relations AND cure”
