Introduction and objectives: The increasing incidence of cancer raises significant concerns for both the physical health and psychological well-being of patients. In oncology, approximately 20% of patients suffer from depressive disorders, a significantly higher percentage than in the general population. This work aims to explore the benefits of art therapy in cancer patients suffering from depression in order to improve their quality of life. Materials and methods: This research uses a narrative review of studies published between 2018 and 2023 on PubMed and Google Scholar, using ‘art therapy’ and ‘depression’ as keywords. Studies that did not focus on the field of oncology were excluded. Results: The selected studies thoroughly examined the potential of art therapy as a therapeutic tool that can be integrated into normal nursing care activities. Significant evidence emerged on its applicability not only in the direct treatment of patients, but also in the context of prevention and palliation of cancer patients. Discussion and conclusion: Art therapy offers a significant contribution in promoting mental well-being and is a useful tool to facilitate early diagnosis of depressive disorders. It also helps to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life through its use as a complementary treatment to a pharmacological approach. The beneficial effects of art therapy can also extend to palliative care, where it positively influences both the psychological well-being of the patient and the caregivers. A number of papers analysed drew attention to the effects of this therapeutic tool in paediatric cancer patients, highlighting a potential positive impact; however, further research is needed, especially in the context of paediatric palliative care. In conclusion, art-therapy emerges as an extremely beneficial therapeutic tool for cancer patients suffering from depression, but requires ongoing interventions to maximise its effect.
