Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global warning that depression will be the leading cause of disability in the world and will become the most prevalent mental illness by 2030. Three out of four citizens still believe that depression is not a disease but a “temporary state” and that “it happens to everyone to feel depressed from time to time” underestimating the severity of the disorder. Aim: To highlight how disabling depression is, provide a valuable support network, and educate caregivers and people to counter the social stigma of depression. Materials and Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted using PIO methodology on three different databases and the selection of twelve articles from the last ten years (2014-2024) that fit the inclusion criteria. Results: Each article had the opportunity to analyze a different setting, from social to relational, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, raising awareness of how important it is to talk about it and to never underestimate depression. Conclusion: We need to be informed not only about drug therapy and its effects, but also about other possible therapies that can be associated with it, such as psychological therapy or alternative treatments. It is essential to talk about it more and more and to improve caregiver education by providing caregivers with good tools, such as pamphlets, recorded lectures or training courses.
