Background: In recent years, disasters have occurred frequently all over the world, and disaster medicine has come to the9attention of the entire cultural and scientific world. The definition of disaster relates to an event characterized by the destruction of infrastructure and social fabric. Maxi-emergency, or MCI, concern those events that are confined to a specific territorial portion. The organization of relief following complex events is the responsibility of the 118 Emergency System. But is there a professional figure particularly suited to perform the duties of Disaster Manager? The professionals involved in managing the health aspects of a disaster are many and multiprofessionally based. The role of the health professional takes on even greater relevance in these contexts. Tasks such as triage, evacuation, caring for critically ill patients, and organizing and managing shelter areas in appropriate health care facilities are assigned to trained nurses. In some situations, the early stages of response may be handled entirely by these health care professionals. The role of the nurse, including from a managerial perspective, can therefore be crucial in the event of a disaster or major incident. Aim of the Study: The main objective of the research is to examine and evaluate the core competencies required of SET 118 nursing personnel in AST 5 in Ascoli Piceno in response to disasters and major incidents (MCIs). In addition, the study has a secondary objective, to identify any gaps among healthcare professionals regarding knowledge of disaster medicine and the crucial role of Disaster Nursing during a catastrophic event or mass casualty incident. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with the integration of the Nurses' Perceptions of Disaster Core Competencies Scale instrument (NPDCC) by scholar Celik. F (2010), an attempt was made to analyze and assess the competencies and level of education of nurses working in SET 118 in the province of Ascoli Piceno, regarding disaster medicine and regarding all nursing care during a disaster. Results: Significant participation in the study reflects a strong professional interest and commitment of nurses toward improving their skills in emergency and disaster settings. The nurses' high level of education confirms the nurses' ongoing commitment toward professional development in the field. The skills of nurses were found to be particularly strong. However, the analysis also revealed the need for improvement in specific areas , such as communication. Conclusions: The overall analysis suggests that the nurses involved in the study have the skills to deal with non-routine emergency situations, in particular, disasters and MCI.
