Introduction: Organ and tissue donation is considered a free and anonymous act that offers a second chance at life to those who need a transplant. It is a very complex process that involves several professional figures, including the transplant coordinator nurse (TNC). In Italy, law 91/”99 regulates donation, defining the consent criteria and the organ harvesting. The TNC plays a crucial role in the coordination, supporting families and managing the transplant operational process. The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of the transplant coordinator nurse, also evaluating the professional skills required, the organizational difficulties, the interactions with the person assisted, the family and the medical team. Materials and Methods: A literature review was carried out on the main databases, using the PubMed search engine and Google Scholar for free search. The PRISMA method was followed for the review and 10 studies were selected. Results: Studies that frame the figure of the transplant coordinator nurse were examined, with the aim of identifying the strengths, limitations and role within the multidisciplinary team. Discussion: This review explores the role of the TNC in different countries, analyzing the necessary skills and professional challenges. Studies conducted in Spain, England, Italy and the United States, highlight the importance of the TNC in coordinating the donation and transplant process, with a focus on specialist training, management of multidisciplinary teams and effective communication. The ethical implications for nurses are also examined. The TNC is seen as a key figure in ensuring patient safety and improving the efficiency of the system. Conclusion: The technical and transversal skills needed tomanage the donation and transplant process, including ethical, legal and health related aspects, are highlighted. The importance of collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and themanagement of resources is underlined, despite the challenges related to staff shortages and the lack of official recognition of the figure.
