INTRODUCTION: Home care for individuals with mental health issues brings benefits to the individuals and their family, but it is important to be aware of the potential risks to the individuals. OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this paper is to identify and analyze some of the specific risks of home care for individuals with mental health challenges and vulnerability, with the aim of improving the impact of home care on the quality of life of individuals and their family/social network. The secondary objective of the paper is to analyze the relational skills that nurses must possess, evaluate their training, and the support provided to nurses working in home care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The method used was a literature review, with data collected from nine scientific articles, research from official websites, and databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. RESULTS: The literature review reveals that home care for individuals with mental health issues presents numerous advantages, such as more personalized care and a reduced risk of hospitalization. However, several risks were identified, including the risk of suicide and self-harm, and non-adherence to therapy. Additionally, it was found that the lack of training for nurses can reduce the effectiveness of home care. DISCUSSION: Returning home after a long hospitalization is a critical moment, given the high risk of suicide. Non-adherence to therapy is another significant risk, with the interruption of medications potentially leading to health deterioration. Furthermore, nurses must possess specific skills to manage these situations, but the lack of training in this area is an issue. CONCLUSION: Home care for individuals with mental health issues, while offering numerous benefits, also presents significant risks that must be carefully managed. To reduce these risks, it is essential to invest in continuous training for nurses and provide adequate support for both them and the families of the individuals.
