Global Value Chains (GVCs) have significantly shaped international business by enabling firms to optimize costs and enhance competitiveness through globalized production. However, recent disruptions—such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and environmental concerns—have exposed vulnerabilities in these networks, prompting a reassessment of offshoring strategies. In response, companies are increasingly adopting reshoring, nearshoring, and supplier diversification to enhance supply chain resilience and sustainability. This thesis examines the strategic adaptation of multinational companies in Italy to evolving GVC dynamics, with a focus on Clementoni SpA. Through a detailed case study, the research explores the firm’s transition from production in China to a hybrid approach that includes reshoring to Italy and nearshoring in Eastern Europe. The study employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, integrating extensive literature review, data analysis, and expert interviews to assess the economic, logistical, and geopolitical factors influencing production shifts. Findings highlight key drivers behind Clementoni’s decision, including rising labor costs in China, supply chain disruptions, and shifting geopolitical risks. The analysis—supported by an interactive dashboard and clustering models—identifies Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia as viable nearshoring alternatives based on industrial competitiveness. Additionally, interviews with key stakeholders provide insights into the firm’s strategic priorities, balancing cost efficiency, operational stability, and sustainability. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on deglobalization by offering practical insights for firms navigating supply chain restructuring. It underscores the need for companies to adopt flexible, regionally integrated production models that enhance resilience while aligning with evolving regulatory and market conditions.

Abstract
Global Value Chains (GVCs) have significantly shaped international business by enabling firms to optimize costs and enhance competitiveness through globalized production.
