Rewilding is a restoration approach that aims to reconstitute self-sustaining natural ecosystems by increasing trophic complexity, disturbance stochasticity, and dispersal, all while minimizing human intervention. It's argued that these components also tend to improve ecosystem resilience. A study conducted through a meta-analysis investigated whether interventions designed to increase biodiversity, disturbance stochasticity, or connectivity effectively increase the resilience of ecosystems to future biotic and abiotic disturbances. It was found that, overall, the three components of rewilding increased the resilience of variables related to demography, biodiversity, biophysical characteristics, and disturbance regime characteristics. However, the outcome is influenced by the nature of the disturbance and the approach to resilience, with less success reported for abiotic disturbances and socio-ecological resilience. In general, the results empirically demonstrate the predominantly positive effects of rewilding on ecosystem resilience, supporting the potential of this approach to prepare ecosystems for the uncertain effects of increasing climate change and associated disturbances, while also acknowledging some limitations depending on the nature of the disturbance.

Abstract
In general, the results empirically demonstrate the predominantly positive effects of rewilding on ecosystem resilience, supporting the potential of this approach to prepare ecosystems for the uncertain effects of increasing climate change and associated disturbances, while also acknowledging some limitations depending on the nature of the disturbance.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
