Earth has transgressed six out of the nine planetary boundaries identified as essential to maintaining the stability of the Earth system during the Holocene. These boundaries represent critical thresholds in key biophysical processes, whose exceedance may undermine the resilience of the global ecosystem. The boundaries currently exceeded include: climate change, biosphere integrity, pollution from novel entities, disruption of nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, freshwater use, and land-system change. Planetary boundaries provide a “scientific compass” to guide human development within a safe operating space. However, restoring balance requires transformative global actions focused on ecosystem regeneration, emissions reduction, and reforming production and consumption models.

Abstract
Earth has transgressed six out of the nine planetary boundaries identified as essential to maintaining the stability of the Earth system during the Holocene. These boundaries represent critical thresholds in key biophysical processes, whose exceedance may undermine the resilience of the global ecosystem. The boundaries currently exceeded include: climate change, biosphere integrity, pollution from novel entities, disruption of nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, freshwater use, and land-system change. Planetary boundaries provide a “scientific compass” to guide human development within a safe operating space. However, restoring balance requires transformative global actions focused on ecosystem regeneration, emissions reduction, and reforming production and consumption models.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
