The Vipera ursinii is a rare and vulnerable species typical of European mountain grasslands whose survival strictly depends on the availability of trophic resources. The research, conducted in an area of the Sibillini Mountains National Park, allowed analysis of the diet of this viper to understand how body size and seasonality influence its food choices. It emerged that the reptile mostly prefers orthoptera, a key food in summer. During periods when these are scarce, young vipers, particularly females, expand their trophic niche by consuming alternative prey such as arachnids, ants and molluscs. Adults tend to maintain a stiffer diet limited to the main invertebrates even in spring. The conservation of the species, therefore, must not be limited to the exclusive protection of orthoptera but must take into account the entire mosaic of prey available in the habitat.

Abstract
The Vipera ursinii is a rare and vulnerable species typical of European mountain grasslands whose survival strictly depends on the availability of trophic resources. The research, conducted in an area of the Sibillini Mountains National Park, allowed analysis of the diet of this viper to understand how body size and seasonality influence its food choices. During periods when these are scarce, young vipers, particularly females, expand their trophic niche by consuming alternative prey such as arachnids, ants and molluscs. Adults tend to maintain a stiffer diet limited to the main invertebrates even in spring. The conservation of the species, therefore, must not be limited to the exclusive protection of orthoptera but must take into account the entire mosaic of prey available in the habitat.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
