ABSTRACT Social media represent a fundamental component of contemporary daily life. Originally conceived as tools for connection and sharing, they have rapidly evolved into platforms for information exchange, communication, and social participation. Within the healthcare context, this transformation has profoundly reshaped the relationship between citizens and healthcare professionals, generating new opportunities as well as ethical, legal, and professional challenges. INTRODUCTION This dissertation examines the scientific literature published over the past decade regarding the use of social media by nurses as instruments of health communication. The reflection underpinning this work arises from the need to understand how to reconcile one’s professional identity with an active presence on social media platforms. OBJECTIVE To analyze how nurses access and utilize social media, assessing the associated risks, benefits, and potential in enhancing the quality of care and communication with the public. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study adopts an observational approach aimed at exploring the relationship between nurses and social media, combining a review of the relevant scientific literature with the direct observation of digital content. DISCUSSION Social media have transformed healthcare communication, creating new spaces for dialogue and interaction among nurses, patients, and citizens. When used appropriately, they can support health promotion, scientific dissemination, and the advancement of the nursing profession. However, potential risks — such as privacy violations, unprofessional language, and the spread of misinformation — call for greater digital awareness, ethical reflection, and professional responsibility. CONCLUSIONS Social media are not merely communication tools but dynamic spaces for relationship-building, knowledge sharing, and care. Within these environments, nurses encounter both a challenge and an opportunity: to preserve the human essence of caregiving in an increasingly digital world. This dissertation invites reflection on how technology can serve not as a barrier, but as a bridge between competence, ethics, and humanity.
