The thesis summarizes the path toward economic development followed by several countries in the Far East and Southeast Asia in particular. It begins with the four “Asian Tigers”: South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It then focuses on the so-called “minor tigers”: the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Finally, a comparison with the Chinese model is presented, and an attempt is made to understand the role played by China in the development of its neighboring countries.
