Background: Communication represents one of the fundamental elements of nursing care, particularly within the emergency-urgency context. In this setting, language barriers can interfere with the relationship between nurse and patient, influencing the quality of care and patient safety. Objective: This literature review aims to analyze the impact of language barriers on nurse-patient communication in the emergency-urgency area and to identify the main strategies adopted to improve the quality of care. Materials and Methods: A literature review was conducted by consulting biomedical databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Scientific articles published in recent years were selected, focusing on language barriers, intercultural communication, and linguistic mediation strategies in healthcare. Articles were selected through a specific search string based on criteria such as full-text availability and relevance of the title or abstract to the topic. Results: The analysis of the literature shows that language barriers can compromise the collection of clinical information, increase the risk of errors, and negatively influence the therapeutic relationship. The use of support tools, such as interpreting services and digital technologies, along with the development of communicative and transcultural competencies by nurses, contributes to improving communication effectiveness and the quality of care. Conclusions: Language barriers represent a significant challenge in emergency-urgency contexts. It is therefore essential to promote organizational and educational strategies aimed at supporting healthcare professionals in managing communication with patients of different languages and cultures, in order to guarantee safe, equitable, and person-centered care. Keywords: language barriers, emergency department, communication barriers, APP, translation, nursing, mediation, transcultural nursing.
Background: La comunicazione rappresenta uno degli elementi fondamentali dell’assistenza infermieristica, in particolare nel contesto dell’emergenza-urgenza.
