Introduction Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for severe psychiatric disorders, particularly in cases of treatment-resistant depression, catatonia, and certain forms of schizophrenia. Despite its well-established efficacy and safety, it is still associated with stigma and negative perceptions, which can affect therapeutic adherence and the patient’s experience. In this context, nursing care plays a central role. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the role and competencies of nurses in the ECT process, with particular attention to patient safety, patient experience, and nursing interventions across the different stages of treatment. Materials and Methods A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, including studies published between 2010 and 2025, in English, and available in full-text. Qualitative, experimental, observational studies and literature reviews relevant to the topic were selected. A total of 10 articles were included. Results Nursing care is fundamental at all stages of the ECT process: pre-procedural assessment, patient preparation, intra- and post-procedural monitoring, and educational interventions, all of which contribute to safety and the prevention of adverse events. Furthermore, effective communication, psychoeducation, and emotional support enhance the overall patient experience, reducing anxiety and stigma while promoting adherence to treatment. Analysis, Discussion, and Conclusion The nursing role in ECT is multidimensional, integrating clinical, educational, and relational competencies. Nurses are key figures in ensuring safety, quality of care, and patient-centeredness throughout the therapeutic process. However, limitations exist due to the limited availability of specific studies and the insufficient attention given to certain phases of care. Therefore, it is necessary to promote specialized training and develop evidence-based protocols to improve clinical practice and reduce the stigma associated with ECT.
