In recent decades, healthcare systems have faced profound changes related to the aging population, the rise in chronic diseases, and the growing complexity of care pathways. In this context, health literacy (HL) represents a fundamental skill for enabling citizens to access, understand, and use health information to make informed decisions about their health. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the perception, knowledge, and applicability of health literacy in nursing practice, assessing its impact on care outcomes through a narrative review of scientific literature. The review was conducted through a search in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using keywords such as "Health Literacy," "Nurses," "Nursing role," and "eHealth Literacy," "Perception," "Knowledge," "Patient education," "Communication," and "Competence," combined with Boolean operators. Scientific articles published from 2015 onward, in English or Italian, relevant to the nursing role and the promotion of health literacy were included. A total of 14 studies were selected, including observational studies, qualitative studies, and literature reviews. The results highlight how nurses recognize the importance of health literacy in clinical practice, particularly in patient communication, health education, and promoting self-management of chronic conditions. However, several studies highlight the still limited knowledge among healthcare professionals and the lack of structured tools for assessing health literacy in patients. The review also highlights the central role of nurses in facilitating the understanding of health information and promoting patient empowerment. Integrating health literacy into care pathways and nursing education programs therefore appears essential to improving the quality of care, promoting treatment adherence, and reducing health inequalities.
