The Portevin Le Chatelier effect is a phenomenon that occurs in steel and aluminium alloys when they are by a plastic deformation, causing a zone of heterogeneous deformation that are repeated along the material and a fluctuation of the tension-deformation curve in the plastic zone with the characteristic shape of “saw teeth”. This effect is dangerous because of aesthetic problem for the material deformed and also because of it involves structural problems with a considerable decrease in mechanical properties. The first who noticed this effect was Portevin Le Chatelier, from which this effect takes its name. Nowadays there isn’t an univocal ad verified explanation for the phenomenon yet, the most credited is the Dynamic Strain Aging (DSA), that attributes the cause to an interaction between the movement of dislocations and the spread of solute atoms. In this work, we analyse the Portevin Le Chatelier effect on tensile tests, made in aluminium alloys from the series 5000, alloy of particular interest for its cheapness and for his discrete mechanical properties. Initially we describe some general information about aluminium alloys, tensile tests and the phenomenon is explained in more detail showing the main theories underlying it. Subsequently we enter into what is the real experimental analysis. In particular, the DIC (Digital Image Correlation) method will be introduced, one of the most widespread techniques for measuring displacements and deformations in a uniaxial tensile test. After we explain the operation of the method, all the equipment that composes it and its most significant parameters, we will focus our attention on the deformation maps of the specimen for a tensile test with a set deformation rate (in our case of 3 mm / s). A specific DIC software, more specifically MatchID in our case, processes these maps. The procedure includes several phases: first, it is necessary to insert the image of the starter specimen (before starting the test) and the subsequent ones, when the specimen begins its deformation (obtained by means of photographs in the form of frames). After this, it is necessary to set the characteristic parameters of the test, which we will see in detail later. Moreover, it is precisely here that our analysis will be focus: in particular, our aim will be to see how the deformation maps change as each of these parameters varies, and to be able to see the sliding bands typical of the PLC effect from the different maps.
