This thesis examines the transformation of search engine optimisation (SEO) within a digital marketing landscape increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, personalised algorithms, and evolving frameworks of digital trust. As search engines have moved from keyword-based retrieval toward semantically aware, intent-sensitive, and machine-learning-governed systems, the criteria by which digital content achieves visibility have shifted in fundamental ways implicating organisational credibility, subject-matter expertise, and authentic community endorsement alongside conventional technical configuration. The study adopts an exploratory mixed-methods research design. A conceptually oriented review of the literature, drawing on peer-reviewed scholarship from information retrieval, digital marketing, consumer behaviour, and strategic management and complemented by authoritative industry documentation, builds the theoretical framework; this is then examined empirically through a structured practitioner questionnaire and a semi-structured expert interview with WhitePress, a European content-marketing and publisher-network platform used as a contextual practitioner reference. The literature review integrates the evolution of search and SEO, the role of digital trust, the E-E-A-T quality framework, and social proof in shaping consumer behaviour and algorithmic visibility, and the organisational implications of SEO automation and AI-assisted content production into a single Literature Review and Conceptual Framework chapter (Chapter 1); the study then sets out the research methodology (Chapter 2); and presents and discusses the empirical findings (Chapter 3), interprets them in the Discussion (Chapter 4), and draws together the study’s contribution in the Conclusion (Chapter 5). The thesis argues that AI-driven search has made digital visibility simultaneously more technically sophisticated and more dependent on fundamentally human qualities genuine expertise, reputational authority, and authentic social validation. For businesses, this demands organisational capabilities in editorial depth, cross-functional coordination, and adaptive performance measurement that traditional SEO practice was not designed to develop. The European regulatory context, shaped by the General Data Protection Regulation and the Digital Services Act, further conditions how personalisation and algorithmic visibility can be pursued within EU markets, creating both compliance obligations and strategic opportunities that the existing literature has underexplored. Drawing the theoretical and empirical strands together, the thesis offers a set of evidence-based strategic recommendations for firms operating in AI-mediated digital markets and identifies priority directions for further research.
