This thesis examines private banking as a specialized component of the European financial system, focused on the management, protection and planning of the wealth of high-net-worth individuals and families. The analysis starts from the historical evolution of the sector, originally based on the custody of wealth and on the fiduciary relationship between client and banker, and highlights its gradual transformation into a more complex advisory model, in which wealth planning, investment management, investor protection and intergenerational wealth transfer play a central role. The first part of the thesis explores the main features of European private banking, with particular attention to the segmentation of HNWI and UHNW clients, organizational and service models, and the role of private banking within the financial system. The second part focuses on investor protection, considering transparency, risk profiling, suitability of recommendations and management of conflicts of interest. The final part analyses the growth prospects of the private banking industry, taking into account the main drivers of transformation: demographic change, generational wealth transfer, increasing wealth complexity, technological innovation, macroeconomic dynamics and European institutional initiatives. The study shows that private banking cannot be reduced to portfolio management alone. Rather, it represents an intermediation model based on trust, advisory quality, client protection and the ability to respond to increasingly complex wealth-related needs.
