This thesis work describes the development and experimental validation of a bridge system designed to interface two distinct communication protocols: the LIN bus, used for the user interface, and the RS-485 bus, dedicated to controlling the power modules of an induction cooktop. The primary objective was to overcome the incompatibility between these two environments by designing a device capable of translating commands in real time, generating a 100Hz Heartbeat synchronization signal required to enable the power electronics, and implementing control logic not natively supported by the hardware components. The development followed a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) approach. After an initial validation of the individual buses, the bridge was integrated as a LIN slave node. A routine for command parsing was implemented, as well as an asynchronous aggregation system for temperature and status data coming from the RS-485 power modules. The most complex technical challenges involved two main aspects: the management of hardware resources and UART peripherals, which was resolved by adopting an Arduino Portenta H7 platform, and the conversion of power setpoints between the LIN format (0-255) and the RS-485 standard (0-100%), which requires non-linear mapping. Finally, particular attention was devoted to system determinism: an asynchronous, non blocking polling algorithm was implemented for the RS-485 bus. This ensured that traffic management on the LIN bus—which has extremely strict timing requirements—was always given top priority, thereby preventing concurrency conflicts and undesirable latencies.

Abstract

Study, implementation and testing of LIN-RS485 bridge for measurement data transmission
