"Can the mechanical engineer's work in 3D model design be replaced or assisted by AI-driven CAD systems capable of creating models from textual prompts or images?". To provide a precise answer, a survey of CAD systems matching the required criteria was conducted; the selected software had to be free to use, accessible either through an application or via the web and capable of accepting a textual input or an image and returning a 3D model downloadable in .STL or .STEP format. The objective was to perform a systematic comparison of these tools by analysing them through two different workflows: the first using a textual description of the required model as input, the second using an image representing the model. The analysis of the generated output was made objective and systematic through the definition of specific parameters that allow for a "mechanical" evaluation, by examining the dimensions, the features created and assessing whether they match those of the requested model, while also considering the time required for generation and any necessary post-processing adjustments. Each parameter is associated with a numerical score derived from a formula consistent with the level of precision required in mechanical design. The study was carried out three different models (flange, connecting rod, support) with increasing levels of complexity, evaluated based on the number and shape of surfaces, the presence of holes, slots, threads, chamfers and fillets. For each software, all three models were generated using both workflows and anlysed according to the defined parameters, allowing for an objective final assessment of whether the software in question could provide a positive answer to the initial research question.

Abstract
For each software, all three models were generated using both workflows and anlysed according to the defined parameters, allowing for an objective final assessment of whether the software in question could provide a positive answer to the initial research question.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
