This thesis studies three methods for repaying a loan: the French method (ammortamento francese), the Italian method (ammortamento italiano), and the general method under simple interest. Rather than treating them as separate topics, the work builds a single general framework based on an arbitrary discount function and shows that the French and Italian methods follow from it as special cases, each arising from a different combination of interest law and payment constraint. The general method under simple interest is then derived within the same framework and is included because of its legal relevance in the Italian debate over anatocism. Chapter 1 covers the theoretical foundations: the key formulas, the closure conditions, and the derivation of the French and Italian methods. Chapter 2 introduces the general framework and shows how all three methods fit inside it, then builds the full amortization schedules in Excel and R. Chapter 3 works through a single numerical example using the same loan parameters for all three methods and compares the results. Keywords: amortization, French method, Italian method, general method, discount function, annuity, loan repayment, R, Excel.
