This thesis examines Bulgaria’s path from the currency board to euro adoption as a case of macroeconomic stabilization and European monetary integration. After the 1996–1997 crisis, Bulgaria introduced a rigid exchange rate regime that helped restore confidence in the currency, reduce inflation, and strengthen fiscal discipline. The study reviews the theoretical framework of exchange rate regimes, optimum currency area theory, and convergence criteria for euro adoption, then compares Bulgaria with other small open European economies. The empirical analysis focuses on inflation, interest rates, GDP growth, employment, current account balances, and public finances, showing strong nominal stabilization and improved macroeconomic credibility. At the same time, real convergence remains incomplete, with persistent gaps in productivity, per capita income, and institutional quality. The currency board thus appears as an effective bridge toward the euro, but not as a solution to Bulgaria’s structural weaknesses.
