The Sos Enattos mining site, in the municipality of Lula, Sardinia, is the official Italian candidate to host the Einstein Telescope (ET), the next-generation underground observatory for the detection of gravitational waves. The establishment of such a large-scale infrastructure in an area marked by decades of depopulation and economic marginalization raises a specific design question: how to transform a scientific opportunity into a lasting process of territorial regeneration. Starting from the analysis of the ET’s characteristics, the territorial context of the Nuoro area, and the historical-productive heritage of Sos Enattos, the work investigates the possible relationships between scientific research, landscape, pre-existing mining structures, and local communities. The study of reference cases in which scientific infrastructures and decommissioned productive landscapes have generated new forms of interaction between specialized activities and public space provides the basis for developing a design strategy founded on three core themes: the reversal of the extractive paradigm, which transforms excavated material from waste into a construction and landscape resource; the hybridization of scientific research with artistic, artisanal, and educational practices; and the distribution of the functional program within neighboring villages as a tool for widespread territorial development. On this basis, a masterplan for the ET support campus is developed, organized into three complementary hubs and consistent with the identity and environmental characteristics of the site. The in-depth design study focuses on the Sos Enattos mining hub, conceived as a hinge between the site’s productive memory and its new scientific identity: an architectural device that works on the integration of existing buildings, the shaping of open spaces through terracing made of extracted stone material, and the experimentation with construction techniques rooted in the local context. The project thus adopts a clear cultural stance based on sustainability and circularity, generating hybrid and relational spaces capable of integrating local values and rediscovering the richness of a fragile territory.
Il sito minerario di Sos Enattos, nel comune di Lula, in Sardegna, è il candidato ufficiale italiano a ospitare l’Einstein Telescope (ET), l’osservatorio sotterraneo di nuova generazione per la rivelazione delle onde gravitazionali. L’insediamento di un’infrastruttura di tale portata in un territorio segnato da decenni di spopolamento e marginalità economica solleva una precisa questione progettuale: come trasformare un’occasione scientifica in un processo duraturo di rigenerazione territoriale. A partire dall’analisi delle caratteristiche dell’ET, del contesto territoriale del Nuorese e del patrimonio storico-produttivo di Sos Enattos, il lavoro indaga le relazioni possibili tra ricerca scientifica, paesaggio, preesistenze minerarie e comunità locali. Lo studio di casi di riferimento nei quali infrastrutture scientifiche e paesaggi produttivi dismessi hanno generato nuove forme di relazione tra attività specialistiche e spazio pubblico fornisce la base per l’elaborazione di una strategia progettuale fondata su tre temi: il ribaltamento del paradigma estrattivo, che trasforma il materiale di scavo da scarto in risorsa costruttiva e paesaggistica; l’ibridazione della ricerca scientifica con pratiche artistiche, artigianali e didattiche; la distribuzione del programma funzionale nei borghi limitrofi come strumento di sviluppo territoriale diffuso. Su queste basi viene elaborato un masterplan per il campus di supporto all’ET organizzato in tre poli complementari e coerente con i caratteri identitari e ambientali del luogo. L’approfondimento progettuale si concentra sul polo minerario di Sos Enattos, inteso come cerniera tra la memoria produttiva del sito e la nuova identità scientifica: un dispositivo architettonico che lavora sull’integrazione degli edifici esistenti, sulla conformazione degli spazi aperti attraverso terrazzamenti in materiale lapideo estratto e sulla sperimentazione di tecniche costruttive radicate nel contesto locale. Il progetto assume così una chiara postura culturale fondata su sostenibilità e circolarità, generando spazi ibridi e relazionali capaci di integrare i valori locali e riscoprire la ricchezza di un territorio fragile.
