GLI ULTIMI GIORNI DEL POTENTE MEKONG

This thesis analyzes the environmental, social and geopolitical transformations affecting the Mekong River basin, mainly through the study of Brian Eyler’s The Last Days of the Mighty Mekong and the integration of recent scientific and institutional sources. After introducing the importance of the Mekong for Southeast Asia, the work focuses on the expansion of hydropower dams along the river, from the Chinese Upper Mekong to the Lower Mekong.The thesis highlights how dams, although presented as tools for energy production and economic development, alter the natural flood regime, reduce sediment transport and affect the ecological balance of the river system. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the need for shared and sustainable river governance, able to balance energy development, environmental protection and the rights of local communities.

Il presente elaborato analizza le trasformazioni ambientali, sociali e geopolitiche che interessano il bacino del Mekong, prendendo come riferimento principale il testo The Last Days of the Mighty Mekong di Brian Eyler e integrando l’analisi con fonti scientifiche e istituzionali recenti. Dopo una descrizione del ruolo fondamentale del Mekong per il Sud-est asiatico, la tesi approfondisce gli effetti della crescente costruzione di dighe idroelettriche lungo il corso del fiume, a partire dall’Upper Mekong cinese fino al Lower Mekong. L’elaborato evidenzia come le dighe, pur rappresentando uno strumento di sviluppo energetico ed economico, modifichino il regime naturale delle piene, riducano il trasporto dei sedimenti e alterino gli equilibri ecologici del sistema fluviale. La tesi conclude sottolineando la necessità di una gestione condivisa e sostenibile del fiume, capace di conciliare sviluppo energetico, tutela ambientale e diritti delle comunità locali.
