This thesis investigates the application of predetermined motion time systems within the context of high-end sartorial manufacturing through the case study of Brioni Roman Style, an Italian luxury menswear company belonging to the Kering Group. The main objective of the research is to demonstrate how the MTM-2 (Methods-Time Measurement) methodology can transform standard time from a simple operational parameter into a strategic tool for production planning, efficiency improvement, and industrial cost control. Following an overview of Brioni’s historical development and production organization, the study examines the evolution of predetermined time systems, from MTM-1 to the more advanced MTM-2, highlighting their principles, structure, and industrial applications. The theoretical framework is complemented by an analysis of TiCon, the software platform used for work cycle modeling and standard time management in manufacturing environments. The research is based on direct experience within Brioni’s production facilities, supported by the analysis of internal documentation, industrial databases, and continuous collaboration with the Industrial Engineering and Methods-Time Measurement Department. The study compares the traditional stopwatch-based approach with the MTM-2 methodology, emphasizing the limitations of direct time measurement in terms of subjectivity, analysis time, and lack of predictive capability. Conversely, the implementation of MTM-2, supported by the Datablock architecture and the TiCon platform, enables objective, standardized, and reproducible measurement of operations, fostering waste reduction and continuous process improvement. The findings demonstrate that method standardization does not compromise the high-quality standards required in luxury tailoring; rather, it represents a fundamental tool for ensuring economic sustainability. The integration of time analysis with cost accounting systems allows standard times to be directly linked to the calculation of the Façon Cost, the Industrial Full Cost, and ultimately the final selling price of the product. MTM-2 therefore proves to be a key enabler for production line balancing, performance monitoring, and business competitiveness, showing how traditional craftsmanship and management engineering can effectively coexist within a manufacturing model oriented toward operational excellence.
La presente tesi analizza l’applicazione dei sistemi a tempi predeterminati nel contesto dell’alta manifattura sartoriale, attraverso il caso studio di Brioni Roman Style, eccellenza italiana del lusso maschile appartenente al gruppo Kering. L’obiettivo della ricerca è dimostrare come l’adozione della metodologia MTM-2 (Methods-Time Measurement) consenta di trasformare il tempo standard da semplice parametro operativo a strumento strategico per la pianificazione della produzione, il miglioramento dell’efficienza e il controllo dei costi industriali. Dopo una ricostruzione del percorso storico e produttivo di Brioni, l’elaborato approfondisce l’evoluzione dei sistemi a tempi predeterminati, dal metodo MTM-1 al più avanzato MTM-2, evidenziandone principi, struttura e applicazioni. L’analisi teorica viene integrata con lo studio delle funzionalità del software TiCon, piattaforma utilizzata per la modellazione dei cicli di lavoro e la gestione dei tempi standard in ambiente industriale. La ricerca si basa su un’attività svolta direttamente all’interno degli stabilimenti Brioni, attraverso l’analisi della documentazione aziendale, dei database industriali e il confronto con l’Ufficio Tempi e Metodi. Il lavoro mette a confronto il tradizionale rilevamento tramite cronometro con l’approccio MTM-2, evidenziando i limiti del primo in termini di soggettività, tempi di analisi e scarsa capacità predittiva. L’introduzione del sistema MTM-2, supportato dall’architettura dei Datablock e dal software TiCon, consente invece una misurazione oggettiva, standardizzata e riproducibile delle operazioni, favorendo l’eliminazione degli sprechi e il miglioramento continuo dei processi. I risultati ottenuti dimostrano che la standardizzazione dei metodi non compromette l’elevato livello qualitativo richiesto dalla sartoria di lusso, ma rappresenta uno strumento essenziale per garantirne la sostenibilità economica. L’integrazione tra analisi dei tempi e sistemi di costing consente infatti di collegare il tempo standard alla determinazione del Costo Façon, del Full Cost industriale e, infine, del prezzo di vendita del prodotto. La metodologia MTM-2 si conferma pertanto un supporto fondamentale per il bilanciamento delle linee produttive, il controllo delle performance e la competitività dell’impresa, dimostrando come tradizione artigianale e ingegneria gestionale possano convivere efficacemente all’interno di un modello produttivo orientato all’eccellenza.
