This thesis describes the development of pipelines based on Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision and spatial data analysis techniques for the automatic monitoring of infrastructural elements in the railway sector. The work was carried out in collaboration with the company Te.Si.Fer as part of a project dedicated to the digitalization and automation of railway line monitoring activities. In particular, the activity focused on the automatic identification of railway poles and manholes along a railway section through the combined use of LiDAR point clouds, multi-camera images and spatial data acquired by the systems installed on the surveying vehicle. The research involved a preliminary phase of data analysis and exploration, aimed at understanding the geometric and visual characteristics of the elements of interest. Subsequently, two different pipelines were designed: a geometric-visual pipeline dedicated to railway poles, based on the integration of LiDAR data, object detection and OCR techniques, and a mainly visual pipeline dedicated to the automatic recognition of railway manholes. For the object detection activities, models based on YOLOv8n were used, trained on annotated datasets created during the project. Different preprocessing and OCR techniques were also analyzed for the automatic extraction of the identification codes displayed on railway labels. The results obtained show how the integrated use of Deep Learning techniques and spatial analysis can represent a valid support for the automation of railway infrastructure monitoring activities, reducing the need for manual interventions and improving the efficiency of analysis operations.
