Sustainable water resource management represents one of the main challenges for agriculture, particularly in a context characterized by increasing water scarcity, climate change and growing competition among different water uses. This thesis analyses the role of water as a productive factor in agriculture, examining the main irrigation systems and techniques, the evolution of water management at European and Italian level, and the related environmental and economic implications. The analysis then focuses on the Marche Region and on the reorganization of irrigation management that culminated in the establishment of the Marche Region Consorzio di Bonifica. By comparing the previous fragmented management model with the current collective management system, the thesis examines the main infrastructural and organizational innovations, including network modernization, water-use metering, irrigation demand planning and coordinated management of available water resources. The thesis also highlights the limitations of considering sustainability solely in terms of technical efficiency, with particular reference to the rebound effect and the hydrological paradox. Finally, it discusses the opportunities offered by digitalization, precision irrigation and multi-level governance, emphasizing the need to integrate environmental and economic sustainability with the long-term resilience of agricultural systems.

Abstract
Finally, it discusses the opportunities offered by digitalization, precision irrigation and multi-level governance, emphasizing the need to integrate environmental and economic sustainability with the long-term resilience of agricultural systems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
