This thesis examines the development of the Italian real estate market from Unification to the present day, from the housing question of the late nineteenth century to current challenges, with particular attention to the successive political and economic phases that have shaped housing policy. The analysis shows that the real estate sector offers a privileged vantage point on the major transformations Italy has undergone: internal migration, the divergent paths of urbanisation in the North and the South, the alternation of economic paradigms – from state intervention to liberalisation and on to today's hybrid approaches – and social and cultural change, from the neorealist architecture of the early years of the INA-Casa programme to the housing struggles of the 1970s. Housing thus emerges not only as an economic good but also as the ground on which the state and its citizens have contended, through conflict, regulation and compromise, over the very meaning of dwelling.

Abstract
Housing thus emerges not only as an economic good but also as the ground on which the state and its citizens have contended, through conflict, regulation and compromise, over the very meaning of dwelling.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
