This work analyses the trade-off between price stability and the output gap in ECB monetary policy in the presence of supply shocks, with reference to the war in the Middle East. After reconstructing the ECB's institutional mandate, Poole's model and the Taylor rule, the analysis focuses on the dilemma that supply shocks pose to the monetary authority. The work concludes with an agent-based computational model in R that simulates the trade-off, showing how different configurations of the Taylor rule produce symmetrical outcomes.

Abstract

This work analyses the trade-off between price stability and the output gap in ECB monetary policy in the presence of supply shocks, with reference to the war in the Middle East. After reconstructing the ECB's institutional mandate, Poole's model and the Taylor rule, the analysis focuses on the dilemma that supply shocks pose to the monetary authority. The work concludes with an agent-based computational model in R that simulates the trade-off, showing how different configurations of the Taylor rule produce symmetrical outcomes.

The Trade-off between Price Stability and the Output Gap: the ECB's Monetary Policy in the face of Supply Shocks. The case of the war in the Middle East
