The core of the thesis is the design and development of a sensor-equipped cube made from soft materials with a lattice structure. Specifically, the sensing principle is optical in which the loss of light within a waveguide is exploited to determine the force originating the deformation. A lattice-based cubic structure is compressed in a specific direction by means of a rotary mechanical system based on a set of tendons, i.e. high-strength wires which, when suitably constrained, allow for uniform compression of the object. At the same time, an external user will apply a force on two sides of the cube, causing it to deform proportionally. To determine the cube’s state of compression with confidence, BOAT (Bidirectional Optical Sensors for Actuation Tracking) sensors are used, while, for the force applied externally, tactile sensors are exploited; both technologies have already been developed but never characterized or adapted for the purposes of this thesis. The aim is therefore to evaluate the response of the tactile sensors as a function of changes in the cube’s stiffness or state of compression, in order to understand the degree to which they influence each another. In order to get practical results, several stages have been carried out, including the design of the lattice structure, of the sensors and of the pulling system, followed by fabrication and assembly, leading up to the testing phase and related concluding observations.
