This work focuses on the development and evaluation of interpretable heuristic models for short-term univariate forecasting of air pollutant concentrations. Starting from data published by ARPA Marche, 20 weekly time series were constructed, for which a baseline heuristic formulation and three subsequent variants were defined, each modifying a different aspect of the original formulation. The models were optimized on a validation set and evaluated on a temporally subsequent and independent test set through one-step-ahead forecasts. Performance was assessed using the MAE, RMSE, MASE, and R² metrics and compared with statistical models from the ARIMA family. The results showed greater overall robustness of ARIMA, whereas the heuristic models proved competitive on specific time series, while also highlighting the main generalization limitations of the proposed approach.

Abstract
The results showed greater overall robustness of ARIMA, whereas the heuristic models proved competitive on specific time series, while also highlighting the main generalization limitations of the proposed approach.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
