This thesis compares techniques for forecasting the occupancy rate of electric vehicle charging stations in Milan. Using the TomTom APIs, a novel dataset of traffic and charging occupancy was built and used to evaluate six models (SARIMA, Random Forest, SVM, LSTM, Prophet, NeuralProphet) with a sliding-window protocol. Results show that traffic, being periodic, is predictable, whereas occupancy, which depends on individual choices, is much less so. Correlation analysis and Granger causality tests reveal that, in some areas, traffic anticipates occupancy by one to two hours and can act as an indirect predictor to better plan charging.

Abstract

STUDY AND COMPARISON OF TECHNIQUES FOR PREDICTING THE OCCUPANCY RATE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS
