District heating supplied by industrial waste heat is one of the levers for decarbonising urban heating, and digital twins provide the tools to manage its operation. The literature, however, shows a shortage of physics-based models applied at network scale to coordinate sources, storage and demand. This work, carried out within a European research project, develops the physics-based digital model at the core of the digital twin of a real district heating network supplied by waste heat from a steel mill. The model, based on a hydraulic-thermal formulation of the network, represents twelve consumers, two heat recovery sources and an auxiliary generator; demand profiles are built with the energy signature method from a typical meteorological year. Under nominal conditions, recovered heat covers the entire heating-season demand of about 11,760 MWh without the auxiliary generator, avoiding about 1,170 t of gas oil and 3,740 t of CO₂. The most critical condition is the preventive maintenance of the furnace heat recovery exchanger: when scheduled at fixed intervals in the coldest months, about 19% of the demand during maintenance hours remains unserved, critical consumers included. When placed by the model in minimum-demand windows, it leaves no deficit; this yields an operating rule — performing maintenance with an outdoor temperature of at least 6 °C — which is met in about half of the hours of the season. Thermal storage reduces the deficit by 18 to 45% depending on its size, its contribution being limited by the exchange power, and lowers the threshold to 4 °C, raising the hours available for maintenance to 67%. The work addresses the need for physical fidelity in digital twin models and partly contributes to the coordination of sources and storage; validation against measured data and the integration of an optimisation agent are left as future developments. Finally, the general nature of the tool allows it to be used in the design of new networks.

Abstract
Finally, the general nature of the tool allows it to be used in the design of new networks.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
