Renovation works on load-bearing masonry buildings often require the opening of new wall openings, which locally reduces the stiffness and strength of the walls. Steel ring-frame systems, the traditional solution, are heavy, invasive, slow to install and expensive. Cross-laminated timber (X-LAM, also known as CLT) panels represent a promising alternative thanks to their light weight, speed of installation and good in-plane performance. The behaviour of the system is governed by the steel connections, but for X-LAM, where the cross-layered structure complicates the response, experimental data are still scarce, especially for ring-frame systems of load-bearing masonry walls. This thesis experimentally investigates the shear behaviour of steel-to-timber connections in X-LAM, in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility and failure modes. Axial loading tests were carried out on specimens, with loading and unloading cycles followed by a monotonically increasing load up to failure. The results were compared with the provisions of CNR-DT 206 R1/2018 and Eurocode 5.
