This thesis investigates trajectory tracking for the ERICC industrial manipulator by combining a Sliding Mode Control (SMC) controller with a radial basis function (RBF) neural network whose output layer is updated adaptively. After describing the manipulator and its dynamic model, the thesis presents the SMC design and the network training procedure. The RBF centres are determined using k-means, selected through the Orthogonal Least Squares method, and the spread parameter is chosen by Grid Search. The output weights are then adapted online using the Normalized Least Mean Squares (NLMS) algorithm. The system is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and evaluated in simulation by comparing SMC and SMC with RBF for joint 2 and joint 3 trajectories, both without an end-effector payload and with a 2 kg payload. Performance is assessed using tracking-error and control-effort indices. Without a payload, adding the network does not reduce the tracking error; with the 2 kg payload, the errors decrease substantially, especially for joint 3, at the cost of increased control effort. These results suggest that the network can help compensate for a payload not considered when tuning the controller, within the simulated conditions.

Abstract

Sliding Mode Control for Industrial Robots via Pre-trained and Adaptive Hybrid Neural Network
