This thesis work evaluates the impact of the shot peening mechanical surface treatment on the morphological, mechanical, and corrosion resistance properties of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel. Specifically, the study analyzes the material's behavior in a chloride-containing environment (0.35% NaCl solution) to determine its susceptibility to localized corrosion phenomena, namely pitting and crevice corrosion. The experimental investigation is based on the comparison between a reference sheet kept in the as-supplied state (LNP) and three series of sheets subjected to shot peening using different media: homogeneous spherical metallic shot (LPX), variable grain size metallic shot (LPK), and glass microbeads (LPV). Morphological analyses performed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), along with macrohardness and microhardness tests, confirmed that shot peening induces severe plastic deformation and erases the original microstructure, leading to significant strain hardening and an increase in surface microhardness of up to 91.4% (in the case of the LPX sample). Corrosion resistance was characterized through cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) tests and subsequent macroscopic inspections. The results highlighted how excessive mechanical energy (over-peening), observed in the LPX and LPV samples, compromises the stability of the passive film due to extreme roughness and microstructural alterations, shifting the corrosive attack from pitting to the more aggressive crevice corrosion. Conversely, the treatment with variable grain size shot (LPK) proved to be the optimal compromise: it guarantees a deep and homogeneous hardening of the material without severely degrading the surface topography, maintaining high pitting resistance, a stable passive film, and a wide repassivation zone.
