BACKGROUND: Chronic non-specific low back pain is a highly morbid condition that can lead to limitations in activities and disability. Consequently, it has a strong economic impact both for society and for individuals, in terms of health care costs and absence from work. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this review is to search evidence in literature on the use of elastic tape as a therapy to reduce chronic non-specific low back pain and the resulting disability. RESEARCH METHODS: Pubmed and PEDro electronic banks were consulted. Randomized Controlled Trials relating to the subject affected by CNSLBP and treated exclusively with elastic tape or placebo were examined. RESULTS: Five RCTs were identified. The outcome measures examined are related to pain and disability; in addition, the various studies also measured other parameters, which were not taken in consideration by each of them due to the nature of the study, such as Range of Motion (ROM) or electromyography of the lumbar muscles (EMG). CONCLUSIONS: Treating someone with CNSLBP with elastic tape can help slightly reduce pain and disability. However, it must be considered that the improvement may be due to the placebo effect of applying the tape and that a bandage with only a placebo effect can achieve the same result. Nevertheless, since there is no proven evidence of contraindication to use, it can therefore be inserted into therapeutic treatment by trying to exploit its placebo effect to reduce chronic lumbar pain.
